How will 5G impact Gaming?

Now more than a buzzword, 5G will revolutionize mobile networks. This article covers 5G, discussing how it may impact gaming.

  • What is 5G?
  • How will it make gaming better?
  • What will this make possible?
  • How will 5G impact data plans?
  • When will it be here?

What is 5G?

Not to be confused with 5Ghz wifi, 5G cellular networks will open up entirely new possibilities that weren’t feasible on slower networks.

5G is the next step up in cellular network technology (there was 3G, then 4G LTE, and now 5G). 5G mobile internet is rumored to be 10 times faster than LTE, 5G increases wireless broadband speeds for smartphones and other devices, thus improving data transfer on cellular and mobile networks.

Although dramatically impactful in many disciplines (medicine: surgery performed remotely, automobiles: self driving cars, IOT: smart cities), 5G will also enable and improve many aspects of gaming.

How will 5G impact gaming?

5G will make gaming – specifically mobile gaming – better. This will include:

1. Immediate responsiveness:

This means lower latency. Latency is the time it takes to transmit data from your device to the network and back again. This increases the speed with which a command is registered on your screen. For gaming, a lower latency means that gamers will more quickly be able to make decisions.

2. Better mobile graphics:

The ability to transmit and receive larger amounts of data will allow mobile frame rate to increase (as of January 2020, Fortnite on console can handle up to 60 FPS whereas Fortnite on PC and iPad up to 120 FPS, for example). With a higher frame rate, graphics will be more crisp and player movements will be sharper and easier to calculate.

3. Faster downloads:

5G will notably increase the download speed for games and other apps to your phone. Today, downloading mobile games (many of which are well over 1GB) requires gamers to connect to wifi and plug in their phone to prevent battery drainage. 5G will allow games of this size to be downloaded no problem. Data plans will likely be larger, so people will be more apt to download these games on the go. This will lower the barrier to entry to play all types of video games, increasing its popularity broadly, from mobile and casual gaming to esports as well.

4. Better reliability

Because 5G will provide extremely stable connections, gamers will not experience game and internet connections to drop off or remain unsteady. As more people have stable and reliable internet connections, mass multiplayer online mobile games will continue to grow, expanding the social aspects of many games such as Fortnite, while providing space for the birth of mobile-first multiplayer online games.

5. The end of lagging?

Lagging gets worse when a game’s network reaches peak player volume. Since 5G can handle a higher network throughput than 4G, game servers will manage peak hour data usage more efficiently. Since 5G will reportedly make games 1000 times faster, gamers can expect little to no lagging and more consistent high quality gameplay.

However, game companies will inevitably develop more complex and graphic intensive games. Especially with the continued growth of virtual reality gaming, the processing power required to run video games can be expected to increase.

While 5G will allow game developers to to do more with future video games, we can expect game developers to to continue to push the envelope of technology, eventually reaching the limits of 5G.

What will 5G make possible?

1. Cloud Gaming

Cloud gaming should allow you to play high end, graphics intensive online multiplayer games on your mobile device with low (if any) latency and extremely high quality, resolution, and response time.

You won’t be able to tell that you’re not playing on a mobile device. Look for the following cloud gaming systems to exist soon:

  • Playstation Now
  • Google Stadia
  • Microsoft Xcloud

2. VR Streaming

Virtual reality entertainment has higher bandwidth requirements for a couple reasons:

  1. two images need to be streamed for VR, one to the left eye and one to the right eye.
  2. both of these need to be high-resolution to deliver high-quality experiences.
  3. low frame rate is one of the chief reasons that some VR players get headaches or have poor quality experiences in VR gaming.

The ability for 5G to handle the higher data receipt and transmission will make VR streaming of movies and games much smoother.

3. Future of mobile devices

5G will enable a new breed of handheld gaming consoles – 5G shells that transmit and receive high quality graphics via cloud computing. With the power of 5G, processing power local to device is not practical.

In the future, the purposes served by multiple devices (X-Box, PC, mobile, etc.) may combine into one one device optimized for transmitting and receiving data via the cloud.

With this data being processed non-locally, there is no need to purchase physical copies of games and other software, since they can be easily procured via the internet.

How will 5G affect data plans?

For consumers, it is hard to know if 5G will mean higher prices or not. Given that 5G is an enabler of extremely high download capacity, unlimited data plans will likely be required to take advantage of 5G.

The good news is that some companies such as TMobile have pledged to keep prices the same as 4g.

Data caps may still be a factor as they are today, but ultimately 5G will make the ability to transmit and receive data more abundant.

When will 5G be here?

5G is already here, its just not widely distributed yet. Some cellular plans such as T-Mobile and AT&T already have 5G out. We recommend contacting your provider directly to inquire more about 5G and what it would take to get access.

Mobile Gaming Manifesto

The Mobile Gaming Manifesto

The Mobile Gaming Manifesto describes the rai·son d’ê·tre for mobile games.

Mobile games in context of the current state of technology:

  1. Mobile devices are becoming the primary access point to the internet, globally.
  2. It is normal to have 24/7 access to a mobile device.
  3. Tablets and smartphones (now one and the same) are replacing laptops. A single device serves as a phone, tv, computer, game console, and more.
  4. Whether home or abroad, whether on a car, bus, plane, or train, people can play mobile games everywhere.
  5. People can enjoy video games without the need to access a console.
  6. Mobile players of today have the early adopter advantage: As of 2020, fewer gamers play on mobile compared to console and PC. In the future, more people will play on mobile devices. But for now, there is less competition for those who do play on mobile.
  7. Mobile is no longer reserved for simple and hyper casual games. Complex, MMO PC and console native games like Fortnite and COD are present on mobile devices, with more games on the way.
  8. As technology advances, it becomes more elegant – smaller or even invisible. The cables and boxes formerly required for gaming will become obsolete. Consoles are becoming smaller and may disappear entirely.
  9. It is becoming easier to connect mobile devices to larger display screens.
  10. It is becoming easier to connect mobile devices to a diverse array of gui controllers – from keyboards and mice to Xbox controllers.
  11. There are millions of game apps on mobile.
  12. Mobile game development is accessible to everyone.
  13. Whereas console controllers are rigid, standardized, one-size-fits all by nature, mobile controls involve the touchscreen. Touchscreens are modular. With touchscreens, users can customize the the button control layout for each game. The only challenge (for now) is that touchscreens are flat. Future mobile devices could incorporate more ergonomic designs – from folding or curved screens and beyond.

The 6 Biggest Reasons Mobile Gaming will Dominate

A Growing Industry

There are more mobile games today than ever before. 2020 will bring even more. With a combination of the iTunes App Store, Google Play, and indie websites like itch.io, mobile gaming has turned into a universal phenomena.

Mobile Twins of Console Games

Not everyone has an Xbox, Playstation, or Nintendo console. But everyone does have a smartphone within arms reach at all hours of the day.

Whereas consoles are becoming reserved for the die-hard gamer, mobile is dramatically lowering the cost of customer and user acquisition. Game companies can build mobile versions of console games to reach a broader audience, targeting less-committed gamers. Many of the biggest game companies in the world have already built mobile versions of their most popular console games. You can play major games like Fortnite, Call of Duty, Grand Theft Auto, Mario Kart RIGHT NOW from your phone.

Ease of Setup

Mobile games are arguably more easy to setup; you don’t have run cords from the power outlet to the console and into the back of your dusty television. You just tap to download a lightweight app – seconds later you’re playing.

This lets you try new games much more quickly and easily using a device you already use daily: your phone. No need to spend hundreds on a console.

Mobile Controllers

Mobile gamers can attach ergonomic handheld controllers to their mobile devices. The controllers help people who are familiar with the handheld devices and button setups on consoles replicate that experience with mobile.

Multi-touch

We’ve all seen the ability to do gestures with two or more fingers on a mobile device. This is great in gaming. But the other advantage, compared to, say, clicking on a computer, is that you have multiple access points to the screen. Instead of only having one degree of access with a mouse on a computer, on a mobile device you ALWAYS have two or more degrees of access to what’s happening on the screen. At a minimum, you can use two thumbs.

Innovation in Mobile Development

The number of platforms that allow for you to build mobile games is ever growing. With free software tools such as BuildBox, even people without a technical background can build mobile games. These tools require no coding and no software development needed, so its easy to get started. If you do know some code, BuildBox does allow you to go in and customize Javascript code, although this is not required.

Unity is also an extremely popular game development tool, although it requires a bit more technical know-how.

VR / AR

Beyond simple mobile gaming, the takeoff of virtual and augmented reality cannot be understated. One critical enabler of these technologies is a camera sensor so that objects can be overlaid onto the real world.

Since mobile devices have cameras native to the device, this makes VR and AR experiences extremely fluid and natural. Overtime, it wouldn’t surprise me to see these experiences to be built for mobile-first, rather than console or desktop.

Smartphone manufacturers have added more and more cameras to all sides and faces of mobile devices with the release of every new model, and we can expect this trend to continue to evolve. Its not unreasonable to suppose that 360 degree cameras could soon be present on all smartphones.

Why Fortnite Post-Game Analysis is a MUST for Mobile Players

In Fortnite Mobile, analyzing the elims you both deal AND take can be invaluable to developing your technique as a player.

Doing a Fortnite post-game analysis will not only show you what you did wrong during gameplay, but it can also be valuable to help you realize where your opportunities are to improve.

1. Discover Weak Points

You’ll notice your weak points. A common theme in the play by play analysis video is that he was SLOW to build up. Realizing this can give you ideas for how to improve your build speed and flow.

For example, you could take time to play Fortnite Creative and actually practice building.

Another idea to improve your build speed is by switching up your mobile button position using the HUD layout tool. One thing you can do is actually ADD an extra action button to the side of the screen opposite your look control. That way, by holding down build action, you can quickly look in a sweeping circle motion to build a surrounding enclosure.

2. Analyze Unfavorable FNM Situations

You’ll see what you did to put yourself in an unfavorable Fortnite situation. For example, staying in the same general area for too long will eventually allow other players to realize where you are located.

When your spot gets blown, its identified by more than a few players on the map. By doing so you put yourself at a BIG risk of being attacked by multiple players at one time. While this can be thrilling and makes for an exciting, action-packed game, keep in mind that other players will find you.

3. The small details

The small points are easy to forget to do in the heat of the moment during gameplay. For example:

  • Jumping while running
  • Re-loading during down time, before the action hits.
  • Not switching to a close range weapon like the tactical shotgun when necessary.
  • Not stocking up on resources given the chance
  • Forgetting to check the attics for weapons

4. What works

Remember what went well. Maybe you had a few mid-range AR scopes that just clicked?

Did pick a really good drop point on the map? Did you drop early or late?

Did you move to the new circle early? Doing so may have helped you loot additional buildings before the players further outside.

Ultimately, re-watching your Fortnite games can be really helpful if you want to get better. While it can be annoying to record your screen and have to find a way to store large files (delete them later), its definitely worth it.

The video below provides a short example of play by play post-game analysis, taken from a few clips of Fortnite Mobile gameplay.

Fortnite Snowball Launcher is SO POWERFUL

The Fortnite Snowball Launcher is a legendary explosive weapon for the holiday event. It’s quite powerful within mid-range distances. The Snowball Launcher in Fortnite is difficult to defend against for a few reasons:

fortnite snowball launcher
Snowball Launcher is a
holiday event explosive
weapon.
  1. Splash Damage: Aside from just dealing a lot of damage, the weapon is considered an “explosive”, which means it has a large area of impact. If you are in range, this means it is very difficult to avoid getting taking the hit if someone uses it on you.
    • Even if a snowball does not land directly on you, it will still deal damage if you are located within its wide impact area.
  2. No Ammo: the Snowball launcher does not have ammo, but a simple refresh period of a few seconds before firing another shot. This means it can be used over and over.
  3. Strength: Because the Snowball Launcher is considered a “Legendary” weapon, it deals a significant amount of damage by design.
  4. The snowball launcher will destroy structures, making it difficult to continue building up.
  5. Range: Whereas the rocket launcher is more effective for long-range targets, the snowball launcher lobs the explosives over a mid-range distance, which is a quite common zone of attack during game play.

In the video below, we go through a live-game situation where we were eliminated by an opponent using the Snowball Launcher. We analyze the weapon’s uses and effects, and bring up a few strategic plays to defend against the weapon and avoid dying. either building up heavily or fleeing.

How to Customize Button Layout on Fortnite Mobile with the HUD Layout Tool

The button layout has a tremendous impact on your victory or defeat as a Fortnite Mobile Player. Fortnite allows mobile players to customize the locations of each button (fire, jump, crouch, joystick, etc.) in Fortnite Mobile by using the HUD Layout Tool.

This post will cover everything you need to know to start customizing your controls with the HUD layout tool:

  • What is the HUD Layout Tool?
  • How do you access the HUD Layout Tool?
  • What is the best HUD Layout for Beginners?
  • What are some HUD Layout Tips?

“re-position Fortnite’s buttons on a mobile device however you want…”

What is the HUD Layout Tool in Fortnite?

The HUD Layout Tool is a feature built into the game of Fortnite. The ability to customize the button/control layout is unique to Fortnite Mobile.

  • You can use the HUD Layout tool to re-position Fortnite’s buttons on a mobile device however you want, placing the buttons anywhere on the screen and re-sizing them as needed.
  • Additionally, Fortnite Mobile gamers also have the option to attach a bluetooth controller to their device, if they are more accustomed to console style gaming. Shop bluetooth game controllers here.

The HUD layout tool allows mobile gamers to account for differences in device size and personal preferences. Since editing the button layout is possible at any time, gamers may find it valuable to tweak & revise the setup after each match when starting out. Ultimately, this will allow gamers to find the button layout that works best for their gameplay.

How to get to the HUD Layout Tool

Step 1:

To access the HUD Layout tool, click the hamburger menu icon in the top right corner of the screen at any time.

Step 2:

At the bottom of the menu list, select “HUD Layout Tool”. Tapping this brings up the interface to re-position the buttons.

Step 3:

Simply hold and drag buttons to move them around. Tap the arrow icon in the top right corner of the screen to show the button customization menu. It will tell you what the button is, let you resize them, and more.
Tap the 4 arrows in the top left to re-center the tool.

Step 4:

Dragging your finger on the screen will allow you to move the map around and reveal Extra Buttons available.

While it may seem a bit overwhelming with just how many Extra Buttons there are to choose from, you can actually ignore the majority of them for regular Battle Royale gameplay.

What is the best HUD Layout?

Your HUD layout will depend a lot on your skill level and how long you have been playing Fortnite Mobile. Buttons should be in a place where you can access them fluidly and naturally during heat of the moment fights.

A Beginner’s HUD Layout Setup

If you are new to Fortnite Mobile, go with something simple. When I started playing, my first custom HUD had minimal buttons on screen, no quick access build buttons, and was designed to be used with just two thumbs.

Here is what my first HUD layout looked like, which may be suitable for other beginners as well. Again, this HUD is designed to be simple, for people playing with two thumbs as opposed to four fingers. Since then I’ve experimented with various setups optimized for building and aiming, but we’ll cover that in a future post.

HUD Layout Tool for beginners
HUD Layouts: the simpler, the better (especially for beginners)

The great thing about Fortnite Mobile is that every button is moveable and customizable. You can access the HUD Layout tool at any time to (tweak and change things slightly after each match) so your control setup is always evolving improving with you as you become a more experienced player and figure out what works best for you.

General HUD Layout Tips:

  1. You may want the Fire button near the thumb of your dominant hand.
  2. Look and Move: Move should be on the side of your non-dominant hand. Look should be on the side of your dominant hand.
  3. Map and Settings buttons: move these to the the furthest corner of the screen. While the map takes up a large amount of space on the screen, do you really need to view your minimap at all times? Perhaps it can be covered by your thumb, somewhere out of the way.
  4. Tools and Weapons inventory: there are a few spots you could put these, depending on your play style. If you play 4-Finger, you may want these to be near your non-dominant index finger. If you play with just your thumbs, keeping these at the bottom or top of the screen may be most convenient for reachability.
  5. Jump and Build should be simultaneously accessible while using the Fire button.
    • Having Jump and Build easily accessible allows you to manage all three of these attack and defense processes to give yourself an advantage.
    • When engaged in a close combat fight during a match, you’re going to be jumping a lot and building up for barricade protection. Although it can be tricky to coordinate all three of these processes, the best players master the ability to do so.
  6. Remove unnecessary buttons from your layout. You can drag them to the side so that they are out of the display window.
  7. Some devices allow you to have TWO fire buttons. If you have this option, consider placing a smaller fire button on the side of your non-dominant hand.
    • This would allow you to more easily access Fire when standing in one spot and aiming at opponents.
    • While using your dominant thumb to control Look, it may be more fluid to tap Fire with your non-dominant thumb or forefinger, in this situation.
  8. General Button Settings:
    • Turn on Tap Anywhere to Fire from the main control settings page. This is helpful in addition to having a dedicated fire button.
    • Turn on Turbo Build, and place build shortcut keys on screen for faster building.
  9. Re-size buttons: Although the HUD is great because we can customize it, the caveat is that the more buttons we have on screen, the harder it will be to see the actual gameplay. With each HUD, its important to have a balance between ease of view as well as clickability.
    • The buttons you use most often (Fire, Jump, or Scope for example) should be the largest buttons on your screen.
    • Other buttons, such as Reload, should be easily accessible on screen, but can be smaller so that you can see the actual game.

As a Fortnite Mobile gamer, you have the unique advantage of customizing your button layout. The best part is that you tweak and change the layout as often as you want – even after every match. Eventually, you’ll find a layout that works best for your specific style of game play.
